Despite an expected record maize harvest this season, South Africa’s grain industry continues to face growing production challenges driven by climate variability, changing pest and disease pressures, rising input costs and the need for more sustainable farming practices. However, forecasts indicating a possible return of El Niño conditions could bring uneven rainfall, prolonged dry spells during critical crop growth stages and increased production risks.
