Spunchem: Protecting Crops from Frost and Weeds

South African farmers face a range of challenges throughout the growing season, but frost damage and weed pressure remain two of the most persistent threats to crop productivity.

Frost can damage plant tissue, reduce crop quality and affect yields, while weeds compete with crops for water, nutrients, sunlight and growing space. As weather patterns and production conditions become increasingly unpredictable, practical crop protection solutions are becoming more important.

For more than 30 years, Spunchem International has supported agriculture with nonwoven fabric solutions designed to help growers protect crops, improve growing conditions and farm more sustainably.
More Than 30 Years of Nonwoven Innovation

Established in 1995, Spunchem International became the first spunbond nonwoven production plant in South Africa and has since developed into a major manufacturer of nonwoven fabrics and laminates.

The company supplies products to sectors including agriculture, hygiene, medical, construction and industry, while continuing to invest in manufacturing technology and product development.

Spunchem has expanded its production capacity to approximately one billion square metres of nonwoven fabric annually, supporting customers in South Africa and international markets.

Its approach is guided by a commitment to innovation, quality and service excellence, with solutions developed around practical challenges faced by customers.
Protecting Crops from Frost

Frost is among the most damaging weather-related risks affecting farmers in parts of South Africa.

When temperatures fall below freezing, ice crystals can form inside plant tissue, potentially causing cell damage, stunted growth, reduced quality and, in severe cases, significant crop losses.

Frost-prone areas include parts of the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga Highveld, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, North West, the Eastern Cape interior and sections of the Western Cape.

Vegetable crops such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers can be particularly vulnerable. Fruit producers may also face losses when frost affects flowering and fruit development.

To help growers manage these risks, Spunchem manufactures Frost Cover under its CropGarde™ range.

The lightweight, UV-stabilised nonwoven fabric is designed to help protect crops during cold conditions while maintaining access to sunlight, air and water.

Potential benefits include:

Frost protection during cold conditions

Improved seedling establishment

Earlier crop development

Improved crop quality

Protection against wind and light hail

Reduced insect pressure

Improved moisture retention

Extended growing seasons

By creating a more favourable microclimate around plants, frost covers can provide growers with an additional layer of protection during vulnerable stages of crop development.
Managing Weed Pressure

Weeds present another major challenge for growers, competing directly with crops for essential resources.

Spunchem’s Weed-Gard provides a non-chemical approach to long-term weed suppression. Manufactured from UV-stabilised nonwoven material, the product helps prevent sunlight from reaching weeds while allowing water and air to move through to the soil.

This approach can help reduce weed competition and moisture loss while potentially lowering dependence on chemical herbicides and manual labour.

Weed-Gard can be used in a variety of agricultural environments, including:

Orchards

Vineyards

Nurseries

Vegetable production

Tunnels

Greenhouses

By creating a cleaner growing environment, weed-control fabric can also help growers manage production areas more efficiently.
Supporting More Sustainable Farming

Crop protection is increasingly about more than simply preventing losses. Farmers are under growing pressure to use water, chemicals, energy and labour more efficiently while maintaining productivity and quality.

Spunchem’s nonwoven solutions provide growers with tools that can complement broader sustainable farming practices.

Frost protection can help reduce weather-related crop losses, while weed suppression can support moisture conservation and reduce reliance on chemical and manual weed-control methods.
Innovation Focused on Farmers

Through ongoing product development, technical expertise and collaboration with customers, Spunchem International continues to develop nonwoven solutions around practical agricultural challenges.

Its CropGarde™ Frost Cover and Weed-Gard products are designed to help growers protect crops, improve growing conditions and manage production risks.

As South African agriculture continues to adapt to changing weather conditions, rising input costs and increasing sustainability demands, practical crop-protection technologies will remain an important part of modern farming.

By combining nonwoven technology with a focus on quality, innovation and customer service, Spunchem International aims to support growers across Southern Africa in improving productivity, crop quality and long-term farm sustainability.
