IFAD Vice-President to Strengthen Agricultural Collaboration in Senegal

The Vice-President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Gerardine Mukeshimana, will visit Senegal from March 12 to 14, 2025, to strengthen partnerships and explore new opportunities for collaboration in the country’s agricultural sector.

High-Level Meetings and Strategic Discussions

During her visit, Vice-President Mukeshimana will engage with top Senegalese officials, including President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock Mabouba Diagne, and Minister of Economy, Planning and Cooperation Abdourahmane Sarr. These discussions will focus on enhancing agricultural initiatives, fostering food security, and expanding IFAD’s impact in the region.

New Investment Agreement and Project Visits

A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of a new financing agreement between IFAD and the Senegalese government. Additionally, Mukeshimana will tour IFAD-funded projects in the Bambey and Kaolack departments to assess their impact on rural communities and agricultural productivity.

IFAD’s Longstanding Commitment to Senegal

Since 1979, IFAD has played a pivotal role in Senegal’s agricultural development, supporting 22 programs and projects with a total investment of $1.4 billion—of which $530 million was directly financed by IFAD. These initiatives have benefited nearly 900,000 rural households, boosting productivity, livelihoods, and resilience in farming communities.

Current and Future Agricultural Projects

IFAD’s ongoing efforts in Senegal include:

  • Five active agricultural projects
  • Two projects co-financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF)
  • A grant program supporting rural development

This visit underscores IFAD’s continued commitment to enhancing agricultural sustainability, improving food security, and empowering rural communities in Senegal. Through strategic investments and partnerships, IFAD aims to drive long-term agricultural growth and resilience across the country.
