Lamb Champs Announces Partnership with Karoo Lamb Consortium for Upcoming Event in Graaff-Reinet

Lamb Champs is excited to announce a new partnership with the Karoo Lamb Consortium for the highly anticipated Karoo Lamb Champs competition, set to take place on December 14 in Graaff-Reinet. This collaboration brings a new level of authenticity to the event, enhancing the celebration of Karoo Lamb’s Geographical Indication (GI) status and reinforcing the importance of protecting the unique, regional quality of certified Karoo Lamb.

The Karoo Lamb Champs event will showcase a culinary competition featuring 30 certified Karoo Lamb farmers, each of whom holds the prestigious Karoo Lamb GI designation. These farmers will compete to present the finest lamb in a celebration of the Karoo’s rich flavors and traditions. Guests will enjoy tastings of expertly prepared lamb while a local judging panel evaluates each entry to select the most outstanding lamb of the event. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Karoo, this event is expected to draw around 1,000 attendees and promises to spotlight the heritage and agritourism of Graaff-Reinet.

What is the Karoo Lamb Consortium?

The Karoo Lamb Consortium, a not-for-profit organization, played a key role in establishing the Karoo Lamb GI and ensuring that lamb bearing this designation meets strict quality standards. Protected by South African government regulations, this GI status ensures that only lamb raised on the Karoo’s natural veld, processed in registered abattoirs, and packed under controlled conditions can be called “Karoo Lamb.” Much like Champagne or Parmesan, the Karoo Lamb GI status adds credibility and value to this uniquely South African product.

This partnership between the Consortium and Lamb Champs marks a milestone in promoting Karoo Lamb as a national heritage product, with support from main sponsors Pick ’n Pay and Toyota. Pick ’n Pay’s support will make Lamb Champs farmers’ products more accessible to consumers, while Toyota’s backing highlights the Lamb Champs brand’s appeal. Together, these partnerships will elevate Lamb Champs’ mission of supporting family farmers, boosting agritourism, and spotlighting South African lamb.

A Legacy of Success

Since its founding, Lamb Champs has hosted successful events across South Africa, including in Pretoria and Reitz, drawing large crowds and creating valuable opportunities for local farmers to showcase their craft. These events have not only celebrated the flavors of South African lamb but have also fostered economic growth and tourism in small towns and local communities. The upcoming Graaff-Reinet event promises to continue this tradition, providing an immersive experience that connects consumers directly with farmers while honoring the rich legacy of the Karoo.

The Karoo Lamb Champs promises to be a vibrant celebration of tradition, quality, and regional pride. As the event draws closer, Lamb Champs looks forward to working alongside the Karoo Lamb Consortium and its sponsors to deliver an unforgettable experience that underscores the importance of supporting local communities, preserving South African heritage, and offering consumers the genuine taste of certified Karoo Lamb.

Join us in Graaff-Reinet on December 14 to experience the flavor and heritage of Karoo Lamb firsthand and to celebrate the farmers who bring this exceptional product to life.
