Chain Reaction – 5 Common Chainsaw Chain Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making

A chainsaw is only as effective as its chain, yet many users unknowingly make mistakes that compromise performance, safety, and efficiency. “Oversights in how a chain is used and maintained can turn a powerful tool into a frustrating liability,” says Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager – Distributor Africa for Husqvarna South Africa. “Whether you’re a professional or a weekend warrior, avoiding common errors will help your equipment perform at its best and deliver the results you expect.”

Barthorpe highlights five key chainsaw chain missteps users often make — and how to fix them:

1. Using the Correct Chain
Not all chains fit every chainsaw size or brand. Using the wrong chain can cause poor cutting performance, accelerated wear, and even safety risks.

The Fix: Always use the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) chain designed for your specific model. Consult your chainsaw’s manual or a trusted dealer to confirm compatibility. Beginners benefit from low-kickback chains, while professionals often prefer full-chisel chains for faster cutting. Husqvarna’s X-Cut® chain, engineered for precision and durability, is a strong choice for both amateurs and pros.

2. Pre-Stretching Your Chain
New chains naturally stretch during their first hours of use. Chains that are too tight can wear prematurely, while loose chains risk derailing — a serious safety hazard.

The Fix: Check chain tension frequently during initial use and adjust as needed. Premium chains like Husqvarna’s X-Cut® come pre-stretched to reduce tensioning hassle.

3. Improper Filing Techniques
A dull chain slows cutting, increases kickback risk, and stresses the chainsaw. Filing a chain incorrectly — wrong file size, improper angles, or freehand filing without a guide — damages the cutters and reduces sharpness.

The Fix: Use the correct file size and maintain proper filing angles with a filing guide. Husqvarna’s X-Cut® chain maintains sharpness longer, ensuring smoother cuts and fewer sharpenings. A well-maintained sharp chain not only boosts efficiency but also reduces operator fatigue.

4. Ignoring Depth Gauges
Depth gauges regulate how much wood the cutters remove per pass. If set too high, the chain won’t cut; too low, and cutters remove too much wood, causing excessive vibration and mechanical stress.

The Fix: Regularly check and adjust depth gauges to manufacturer specifications using a depth gauge tool, often included in filing guides. Chains like the X-Cut® are designed for precision with minimal adjustments.

5. Running a Dry Chain
Lubrication reduces friction and heat, which can quickly degrade both chain and guide bar. Forgetting to refill chain oil (in battery or electric saws as well) leads to premature wear and costly repairs.

The Fix: Always ensure the oil reservoir is full before starting work. Use the correct chain oil for optimal performance and longevity. Husqvarna’s X-Cut® chains are designed with superior lubrication efficiency for extended chain life.

“By avoiding these mistakes and following best practices, you’ll keep your chainsaw running optimally — boosting performance, improving safety, extending equipment life, and saving money over time,” concludes Barthorpe.
