SERAP Milk Can Coolers: Solar-Powered Milk Cooling Solutions

For more than 60 years, SERAP has been developing milk cooling solutions designed to help dairy producers preserve milk quality, improve collection efficiency and support local dairy processing.

From small-scale farms to larger dairy operations, effective milk cooling is essential for maintaining milk quality after milking. This is particularly important in remote areas, where long distances to collection centres, unreliable electricity and limited infrastructure can increase the risk of milk spoilage and product losses.

To address these challenges, SERAP offers a range of cooling technologies, including its Milk Can Coolers (MCCs) and bulk milk cooling systems, designed to meet the needs of producers handling different milk volumes.

SERAP Milk Can Cooler: Practical Cooling for Small Dairy Producers

The SERAP Milk Can Cooler (MCC) provides a practical and robust solution for cooling milk directly inside stainless steel or aluminium milk cans.

Designed with small-scale producers in mind, the system enables rapid temperature reduction at the farm, helping preserve milk quality before transportation to collection centres or processing facilities.

By cooling milk closer to the point of production, the MCC helps address one of the major challenges facing remote dairy communities: maintaining milk quality when immediate collection is not always possible.

Solar-Powered Cooling for Remote Locations

Access to reliable electricity remains a significant challenge for many dairy producers, particularly those operating in rural and off-grid locations.

SERAP addresses this with an autonomous solar-powered solution for its MCC systems. Solar panels supply electricity during daylight hours, supporting the cooling process while also recharging an integrated battery system.

The stored energy is then used to maintain cooling during the night, allowing the system to operate without depending on conventional diesel generators or a continuous grid connection.

SERAP also offers hybrid and grid-powered configurations, giving producers flexibility when selecting an energy solution suited to their farm’s infrastructure and operating conditions.

Advanced Cooling Technology for Faster Milk Chilling

The MCC combines a high-performance condensing unit with an ice accumulation system to provide consistent cooling performance. The system maintains a temperature of approximately 0.5°C to 1°C within the cooler.

According to SERAP, its cooling performance allows milk to be rapidly chilled:

First milking: From 35°C to below 10°C within approximately 75 minutes.
Subsequent milkings: From 35°C to below 10°C within approximately 45 minutes.
Continued cooling: Milk temperature inside the cans can progressively reach approximately 2°C.

This rapid cooling capability helps producers reduce the time milk remains at elevated temperatures following milking.

Flexible Configurations to Meet Different Farm Requirements

SERAP’s MCC range is designed to accommodate different production volumes and farm requirements.

The MCC 320 L model, for example, can accommodate eight 40-litre milk cans. Producers can also select between compact and standalone cooling unit configurations.

Available energy options include:

Solar-powered systems.
Hybrid power configurations.
Conventional grid-powered systems.

This flexibility allows dairy farmers to select equipment according to their milk collection arrangements, available infrastructure and energy requirements.

Key Benefits for Small-Scale Dairy Operations

SERAP’s Milk Can Cooler technology offers several potential advantages for dairy producers:

Preserving milk quality at the farm

Rapid cooling helps protect milk quality before collection, particularly in areas where transportation to processing facilities can take considerable time.

Reducing energy costs

The ice accumulation system allows cooling capacity to be built up when electricity from the grid or solar panels is available. This can help optimise energy use and reduce dependence on costly diesel generators.

Supporting separate milk collection

The system can accommodate different types of milk, including cow, buffalo, goat and camel milk, helping collection operations maintain separate milk streams and avoid unwanted mixing.

Improving collection efficiency

By providing on-farm cooling, the MCC can help make milk collection more flexible and support producers operating far from central processing facilities.

Improving Energy Efficiency Through Heat Recovery

Beyond milk cooling, SERAP offers energy recovery solutions designed to improve overall dairy farm efficiency.

Its Heat Recovery Unit captures waste heat generated during the refrigeration process and uses it to heat water. The recovered hot water can then be used for cleaning milk cans, accessories and other dairy equipment.

This approach makes better use of energy that would otherwise be lost, while supporting farm hygiene and cleaning operations.

Building a Micro Dairy with SERAP Batch Pasteurisers

SERAP’s solutions extend beyond milk cooling to include equipment for small-scale dairy processing.

Its Batch Pasteuriser range is designed to support producers looking to move beyond raw milk collection and develop local dairy processing activities.

Depending on the selected configuration, the equipment can be used to produce:

Pasteurised milk.
Yoghurt and other fermented dairy products.
Cheese and other milk-based specialities.

With compact designs and adaptable configurations, SERAP’s batch pasteurisers provide a foundation for establishing a micro dairy, allowing small producers to process milk locally and develop higher-value dairy products.

Supporting the Future of Small-Scale Dairy Farming

By combining milk cooling, renewable energy options, heat recovery and small-scale processing equipment, SERAP provides solutions that address several important challenges facing dairy producers.

Its Milk Can Cooler range is particularly relevant to remote and rural dairy operations, where reliable cooling infrastructure can make a significant difference to milk handling and collection.

From preserving fresh milk at the farm gate to supporting the development of local dairy processing businesses, SERAP’s technologies demonstrate how appropriately designed equipment can help strengthen dairy operations of different sizes.
