Rwanda and AGRA Partner to Establish a Food Innovation Hub for Africa

The Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Innovation (MINICT) and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) have announced a strategic partnership to develop the Rwanda Food Innovation Hub, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming food systems across Africa.

The hub will focus on empowering smallholder farmers, creating inclusive markets and financing opportunities, and strengthening agricultural systems to boost food production, improve nutrition, and enhance resilience to climate change.

This collaboration aligns with Rwanda’s national development priorities, leveraging technology and innovation to drive economic growth and poverty reduction. It also supports AGRA’s 2022-2030 Strategic Framework, which seeks to achieve zero hunger, improved nutrition, and climate adaptation through a food systems approach.

Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), AGRA President Dr. Agnes Kalibata emphasized the organization’s commitment to sustainable food systems, stating, “This collaboration with MINICT will create a vibrant ecosystem for food innovation in Rwanda, benefiting farmers and communities across the continent.”

Minister of ICT Paula Ingabire highlighted the initiative’s transformative potential, saying, “By leveraging technology and innovation, we can revolutionize food systems, empower farmers, and contribute to food security across Africa.”

Under the MoU, AGRA will provide strategic advisory services and play a key role in steering the initiative while engaging national, regional, and global partners to accelerate food system innovations. The Rwanda Ministry of ICT will lead policy design and implementation, coordinate with government agencies, and foster strategic partnerships.

The agreement ensures that knowledge, innovations, and technologies developed through the initiative will be widely accessible and affordable to those who need them most in developing countries. By positioning Rwanda as a leader in food system transformation, this partnership aims to create a sustainable and resilient agricultural future for Africa.
