Bühler and xFarm Technologies Join Forces for Sustainability Monitoring in Agri-Food

A Groundbreaking Partnership for a Greener Future

xFarm Technologies, a Swiss tech leader in the digitalization of the agri-food sector, supports over 500,000 farms spanning 8.3 million hectares daily. Now, in a strategic move toward sustainability, the company is partnering with Bühler, a global powerhouse in plant and equipment development, operating in more than 140 countries.

The collaboration aims to revolutionize environmental monitoring across the supply chain by leveraging primary data collection to track and mitigate environmental impacts.

Addressing Emissions from Field to Shelf

In the food industry, 70-90% of CO₂e-related emissions—categorized as Scope 3 emissions—occur at the agricultural stage. To truly understand and address these environmental impacts, businesses need access to precise primary data not only from food processing but also from raw material cultivation.

By integrating their expertise, xFarm Technologies and Bühler will equip food companies with advanced digital tools to monitor sustainability metrics across the entire supply chain—from farm to processing to final retail. This initiative will help pinpoint major emission sources and implement effective reduction strategies, aligning with Bühler’s ambitious 50-50-50 goals, which target a 50% reduction in waste, energy consumption, and water usage.

A Data-Driven Approach to Sustainability

This partnership will empower food companies with comprehensive data insights to quantify emissions and water use from both agricultural and food processing operations.

  • xFarm Technologies specializes in farm-level data collection, utilizing its proprietary xFarm platform to automatically track agricultural activities and their environmental impact.
  • Bühler’s Environmental Quantification Services enable businesses to measure their sustainability footprint during food processing.

By taking a data-driven approach, food companies enhance transparency, traceability, and ultimately, the value of their final products.

A Partnership Years in the Making

Ian Roberts, CTO of Bühler, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration:
“I am delighted to see the formation of this partnership. Our first contact was in 2018 when xFarm Technologies joined the MassChallenge Switzerland cohort, and since then it has grown significantly in capability and reach. They can play an important role in supporting our customers to understand the impact of their agricultural footprint.”

With sustainability at the forefront of global food production, this alliance between Bühler and xFarm Technologies represents a pivotal step in helping businesses achieve greener operations while maintaining efficiency and profitability.
