Avipro Rwanda has taken significant steps to consolidate its position in the poultry sector, achieving major milestones in food safety certification and production capacity.
Progress Toward FSSC 22000 Certification
The company recently underwent an audit for FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) and is currently awaiting final certification. Successfully passing this audit marks a major achievement, demonstrating that Avipro Rwanda’s entire value chain — from farming and processing to distribution — operates in compliance with internationally recognised food safety standards.
This milestone reinforces the company’s commitment to quality and food safety at every level of its operations. For consumers, distributors, and key clients, it provides assurance that Avipro Rwanda’s products meet strict global safety and quality requirements. In today’s competitive marketplace, adherence to recognised food safety standards is critical to building long-term trust and credibility.
Strategically, FSSC 22000 certification also opens new business opportunities. Many international buyers and large corporations require this certification before engaging with suppliers. By aligning with this global standard, Avipro Rwanda strengthens its ability to expand beyond the domestic market, paving the way for new partnerships and potential export opportunities while enhancing its regional reputation.
Overcoming Audit Challenges
Preparing for the audit presented challenges, particularly as a relatively young company undergoing an international certification process of this scale for the first time. Establishing robust systems was a key priority. The team had to fully understand audit requirements, develop comprehensive documentation, and ensure that all processes complied with global standards.
Equally important was fostering a strong internal food safety culture, ensuring that every employee understood their role in maintaining quality and safety. Oliver Mohabeer, Group Quality Manager at Avipro, played a central role in guiding the team toward meeting the required standards.
Halal Certification Expands Market Reach
In addition to progress on FSSC 22000, Avipro Rwanda has successfully passed its Halal audit. This certification significantly broadens the company’s access to key market segments, including the HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants, and Catering) sector, distributors, and institutional clients. In many regional markets, Halal certification is either mandatory or provides a strong competitive advantage.
Beyond commercial benefits, Halal certification positions Avipro Rwanda as an inclusive and reliable supplier capable of meeting diverse cultural and market requirements. To achieve this, the company formalised and strengthened stringent sourcing, slaughtering, handling, and documentation procedures.
First Chick Hatch Marks Vertical Integration Milestone
In January 2026, Avipro Rwanda reached another major milestone with the successful hatching of its first chicks. The company hatched over 10,000 chicks, achieving an 87% hatch rate — a strong performance indicator for a new operation.
This achievement represents a critical step toward full vertical integration. By managing its own breeding process, Avipro Rwanda enhances quality control, ensures supply continuity, and strengthens long-term sustainability. The milestone reflects the company’s steady growth trajectory and reinforces its commitment to excellence within Rwanda’s poultry industry.
With global certifications and expanding production capabilities, Avipro Rwanda continues to position itself as a forward-looking, quality-driven leader in the regional poultry sector.
