AU-IBAR and ILRI Partner to Strengthen Feed Inventories for Climate-Resilient Livestock
The African Union’s InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) have launched an initiative to standardize methods for conducting feed and fodder inventories and establishing National Feed Balances. Accurate feed inventories are crucial for building a resilient livestock sector, helping nations pinpoint investment opportunities and tackle climate-related challenges more effectively.
To advance this mission, AU-IBAR and ILRI are holding a five-day capacity-building workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, from October 28 to November 1, 2024. This workshop will train technical experts from Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Somalia on using digital tools to improve data accuracy and scalability in feed assessments, moving away from traditional manual approaches.
The initiative combines the expertise of AU-IBAR, ILRI, and participating countries. Insights from the workshop will aid in developing National Feed Inventories and Early Warning Systems, providing data to support resilient livestock policies and sustainable practices across Africa.
