Tanzanian stakeholders call for creation of national organic agriculture policy

Tanzanian agri stakeholders have called for the establishment of the national organic agriculture policy, to aid in regulating and harnessing the comparative advantage offered by organic farming.

Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM) CEO Bakari Monyo said the lack of coherent food policy cutting across all escorts undermines agricultural production in the country: “The food we eat and the food systems we enjoy are shaped by a variety of distinct policy frameworks like agriculture, land, health, environment protection among others. In case of poor productivity, no one can be held accountable.”

Bakari said the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) and other partners in 24 African countries -including Tanzania- undertook a collaborative process of research to identify tools required to deliver sustainable food systems in Africa. In Tanzania, the study looked at food systems, legal and policy frameworks. The study revealed that there are potential synergies that can be taken advantage of to improve the food system.
